New Zealand is in crisis, but the country has been there before. In 1984, New Zealand experienced a simultaneous financial, economic and constitutional crisis which resulted in a decade of radical reform. From 2008, the world went through the Global Financial Crisis whose effects were exacerbated in New Zealand by the Canterbury Earthquakes.
Join us for a conversation with three leading protagonists from the 1980s reform period and the GFC years where we will explore what lessons we can learn from the management of these historic crises – and how the Covid-19 crisis compares.
- Hon Sir Roger Douglas, Minister of Finance (1984-1988) and father of ‘Rogernomics’
- Dr Graham Scott CB, Secretary to the Treasury (1986–1993)
- Rt Hon Sir Bill English, Minister of Finance (2008-2016) and Prime Minister (2016-2017)
